About Us

Our mission is emergency shelter for the homeless when the weather is 25 degrees or less according to the Skagit Valley Herald.   We extend the love of Jesus to these homeless persons with friendship, shelter and food, and we extend a gospel witness as relationships are formed and the Spirit gives opportunity

We need a minimum of twelve volunteers to cover each day we are open. The shelter is open from 5:30 PM until 7:30 AM of the following day.

Here are three ways we are inviting you into partnership with us in serving our community.

1. Run a bulletin announcement in your church asking for volunteers to help serve.

Contact Sorena Brusseau scbrusseau@gmail.com 360-421-0308 to register as a volunteer.

Announcement:

The Skagit County Sever Weather Shelter is a ministry supported by many local churches and administered by  New Life at The Well. It is a platform designed for community ministry to take place. We as the "body of Christ" can team up to serve the least, last, and lost of our area.    The church is located (1 block south of the Chuckwagon on Riverside) opens up the basement to homeless persons when the weather is nasty.  Volunteers are needed to help staff the ministry.  There is an evening shift, overnight shift, and a morning shift that begin at 5pm and end at 7:30am.  Volunteer training is offered.  Please contact Sorena Brusseau scbrusseau@gmail.com 360-421-0308 to register as a volunteer.

2. Agree to sponsor a night at the cost of $100.  This will provide for two meals for staff and clients.  And it will reimburse the church for heating, lighting and toiletry expenses. Some churches have taken special offerings to help the shelter.  Send donations to New Life at The Well, with Shelter From The Cold in the Memo line, PO Box 1104 Mount Vernon WA 98273.  Our Tax ID number is 91 – 1183521.

        3. Collect warm socks, hats, gloves, coats good tents and sleeping bags and deliver them to New Life at The Well. We can provide a bin for your location to collect these items. The kids that attend your children and youth ministries would find this as a great opportunity to serve. You could challenge them as a whole to fill the bin to benefit the homeless in our community.

If you have any questions about this ministry, please contact Keith Luna at  kluna@shelterfromthecold.org or Art McKinnon at amckinnon@shelterfromthecold.org
